Buses by their very nature spend a lot of time at bus stops waiting for passengers to board and un-board. The are also usually driven in cities where they will be at lights or in queues for a significant percentage of the time.
Stop start technology would
- Greatly reduce nitrous oxide emissions as the majority of buses are diesel
- Reduce noise in city centers
- Reduce temperatures
- Reduce particulate emissions which are exacerbated by idling engines
- Reduce overall carbon emissions
We propose
- All new buses ordered from 2018 onward must have stop-start systems fitted
- All buses in low emission zones must be retrofitted with stop start technology by the end of 2019
- All buses in urban areas must be retrofitted with stop start technology by 2020
