The current government policy heavily promotes the use of battery powered electrical vehicles. Many people may consider that these are the only electrical vehicles that are available.
The downsides are
- There is no ability to instantly refuel
- Batteries are expensive
- Batteries have a limited life and are very polluting when recycled
- Batteries are also heavy
The other – and in my opinion far superior technology is hydrogen fuel cells. This is by far the move viable ongoing solution
- Hydrogen is produced locally at the filling station using water and electricity in a simple process called hydrolysis
- Hydrogen can be produced at times of low electricity demand and stored
- The only emission is water
- Now a safe technology
- Range in excess of 300 miles – Refill in minutes
- Lighter than electric vehicles
- No environmental issue from disposal of batteries
In 2017 Shell started a project to open hydrogen filling stations in and around the M25
